Statistical Mechanics, Complex Systems and Plasma Physics
The Physics Department does a wide range of research in these fields by both laboratories and through the Complex Systems Group. In particular, studies of various kinds have been developed such as winemaking, semiconductors, public understanding of science, education, civil unrest, geophysics, astrophysical plasmas, etc., through the Complex System Group and the Plasma Physics Group.
Solid-State Physics
UdeC’s Physics Department has several laboratories dedicated to various research areas related to solid-state physics such as Photovoltaic Cells, Nanotechnology, Characterization of Materials, Thin Sheets, and Physical Engineering in general.
Quantum Information and Optics
The Physics Department houses one of the most important research centers in optics and quantum information in Latin America: the Millennium Institute of Research in Optics, better known as MIRO. Along with this, the Physics Department manages several laboratories in the area which are related to various research projects in the fields of quantum information, quantum mechanics, and optics.
Cosmology, Astrophysics and Gravitation
One of the great areas of research in the physics department is related to Astrophysics and Cosmology. Theoretical studies are mainly carried out in association with Valdivia’s Center for Scientific Studies (CECS) and the Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravitation Group (GACG), which has members throughout the national territory.
